hittin' the pavement, beating the clock
Still improving on my times.
Today's race (NYRR Scotland Run 10K) was dreadful. Six hours of sleep after a day of sitting down in front of a computer retouching in the dark. Biking to the start. Not stretching. Dreadful. I couldn't seem to keep anybody beat during the race. Started fine. Kept a good pace. Yeah, for the first three miles. Then nearly immediately I just kept hanging back and settling. I watched as my splits declined. I tried to keep my mind off the fact that I had to get to work immediately after finishing the race. Nothing could get me to speed up. Thighs burning and vision blurring, I crossed the finish line thinking I must have done better in the past. Only a couple minutes to think though. My bike was chained up on a pole just a block and a half from the finish line. I grabbed my bag. Hobbled a block and a half. Got to pedaling.
When I got to the studio, there was no time to think about running, but I thought it would not set me too far back to check my times.
...turns out I ran my best 10k.
Now that I got the road runs out of my system, I have this week to worry about 70 images for retouching.
Ready.....
GO!

Flamm @ Loving Cup
Biking over the 59th street bridge at 12:45am leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Literally. I was making my way back from a band showcase at the Loving Cup bar in Williamsburg when I learned the hard way that DOT trucks start dusting the bridge at that time causing obscene amounts of dirt and NYC s**t to fly in my face and into my mouth. But really it did not seem that bad. I mean the trip to Brooklyn was to see Flamm live, and that is exactly what he was--LIVE. and so was the audience. It's incredible to see what he does on his keyboard. And his vocals aren't too shabby either. If John Legend were to make a dance track or something to really jam to, Flamm would have done it already. It's like he serves it up one part smooth, one part sophisticated, two parts fun, and a little dash of sexy to make a concoction of awesome bangers. Tonight was particularly worthwhile because he was backed up by his brother, Justin, on bass. I don't care how many times I see this guy perform. Every time he does it it's as enjoyable as the first time.

impulse run last night
Went out for a run last night as a wind down after Sunday's race. I figured I'd go easy since biking is still killing my thighs. Said I'd go out easy. Ended up gunning it.

"Dirt Floors and Stone Walls" (a Jake Murphy production)
This afternoon I made my way back over to Brooklyn to check out what an old classmate of mine has been working on. Last year, Jake spent five weeks shooting some schools in India. I can go on talking about it, but just look for yourself what it was all about>> http://jacobbmurphy.com/index.php?/projects/dirt-floors-and-stone-walls/

Thanks to Facebook and all other forms of social media I was able to get a taste of what he's been up to in the last couple years. Today was his chance to exhibit his work and allow people to get up close and personal all while enjoying the food at Curry Heaven on Grand Street in Brooklyn where the event was held. I must admit at first I was not all too impressed by his work only because it seemed like it was just a reason for him to go on vacation to India and create images that mimic a few greats (with whom he has worked in the past) who I shall not name here. HOWEVER, the event this afternoon to raise funds to continue his project was very enlightening--and filling. Speaking with The Artist himself and seeing prints up close, I realized that his work is much more meaningful than I had anticipated. I was drawn to a few images. Beautiful, dynamic, telling..... whatever. He explained that there is a whole bureaucracy that he had to deal with when he got there as the Indian government is concerned with keeping the poor school system under wraps. He convinced them to let him get in there for just a day and shoot whatever he could get in that time. He was then welcomed with open arms by the teachers who were excited to see that there might be some hope out there.
It was a real eye-opening experience. I do not frequently feel very swayed about an artist's work after hearing the artist talk about it. Originally, I thought that there could not be much potential or hope in exposing these things with photography, but Jake proved himself to be more than capable of turning some heads. I know I am more than likely to contribute some money to his project, and you can too>> http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/saveindianschools/dirt-floors-and-stone-walls-saving-indias-public-s
I feel like it's also worth mentioning that the young students in India are being taught the same material in the same classroom regardless of their age or experience. Some children may already know the material being taught, some may not be able to even keep up. It is those students who are more familiar with the stuff who lend the helping hand to those who need it. Living in a dog-eat-dog society like New York City it is refreshing to see that there are kids out there who help others just because they can. It might be worth trying it out for ourselves. Jake is.
I have included some photos of the fundraising event.
CONGRATS ON THE GREAT WORK, JAKE!
15K down... several more to go
Just ran a 15K this morning. I've certainly felt better before, but it is nice to know that my masochism allowed for me to achieve my best 15K time yet (results below).
It was a good run, but I was feeling the effects of all of the biking I have been doing around the city. Right thigh and flexor were killing me half way through. Of course, we learn from our pain. I felt like walking for a bit, but there are times when I consider the Christian teachings over my Aethist beliefs. If He could create the world in seven days and just spend one day afterwards resting I should have no complaints running a little race in just an hour.

He is trying to raise money and awareness for the under educated children living in the slums of India. His photographs are absolutely stunning and it is remarkable what he has done so far, so it is certainly worth the support.

Be on the lookout. I am going to begin using my blog to display photos that are currently on a variety of really bad websites that I am ashamed to show to others.
I hope you're as excited as I am..
